People of Northwest Yunnan

Northwest Yunnan is as diverse culturally as it is biologically, with 13 different ethnicities represented including Naxi, Yi, Tibetan, Mosuo and Bai.

The dominant ethnicity varies within the region, with Naxi being predominant around Lijiang, Tibetans more concentrated further north and Yi more heavily represented towards the east near the Sichuan border.

Much of the area's cultural diversity comes from its history as a major trade route between Tibet, Yunnan and Southeast Asia.  The old Tea and Horse Trail passes through Northwest Yunnan and provides an avenue for exploring the area's interesting past.

The rapid development and the growth of tourism in Northwest Yunnan is certain to influence the traditions of these minority cultures.  However, done appropriately, tourism can help strengthen the traditions and build the value of cultural heritage in these communities.
